Pesky Prepositions

Superfluous prepositions are creeping in to our language and I blame the BBC . When they announce a programme, they won't just say "Next on BBC1 is Grub Galore", they say "Next UP on BBC1 is Grub Galore". Why "up"?
(Not a BBC one but some people can't just meet you or meet with you, they have to "meet UP with you")
On cookery programmes, they don't cook, saute or bake anything any more, they cook it "off", saute onions "off", bake a Yourkshire pudding "off". the Hairy Bikers are guilty but I have heard Jamie Oliver use the "O" word too. I can understand sweating onions "down" or cooking the flour "out" of a sauce, but why "off"? Maybe there will be a new insult using the "C" word: "Oh, cook off!"
Grrrrrrrrr.....

  1. Please don't inspect my blog too close then.
I'm hopeless at grammar. Only passed English 'O' level at the third attempt!

  2. Rest assured I wouldn't criticise individuals. It's where new things pop up out of nowhere and infiltrate the language that intrigue me.
